Many trends have changed since we first saw the rise of prep style in the mid-1950s, but some rules still apply; for example, sweat pants are for sweating, and you can never go wrong with a trenchcoat. The preppy revival has continued to grow, and collegiate looks are one of the biggest trends this fall with the emergence of varsity jackets and preppy plaids. If you want to look the part of the new prep, it’s very easy to incorporate classic items from Ralph Lauren or J.Crew, but don’t be too concerned about popping your collar.

The new prepster keeps their accessories chic and low-key. For ladies, simple jewellery such as a classic watch and a pair of pearl earrings will complete your look. For men, jewellery should be restricted to a handsome watch.

The hottest trends in footwear this season have also taken their cues from the campus crowd with such classics such as penny loafers and brogues. However, these classic men’s-style shoes are getting a feminine makeover with sky-high heels, sleek patent leather, and suede fringed tassels.

Prepster ladies, keep your makeup as natural as possible. A bit of concealer on blemishes and around the eyes, with a light face powder to set. Keep your eyes well-defined yet delicate by applying just a bit of eyeliner very thinly and as close to the lash line as possible, and then apply a few coats of mascara. To finish the look, add a very soft pink or peach blush and a rosy lip gloss. Make sure you also don’t exaggerate when applying makeup; it should look as natural as possible. The old-school male prepster was always clean-shaven, but the new prepster modernizes this look by letting his facial hair get a little scruffy—more Harvard than hobo, though.

If you’re nostalgic for the Ivy League years or the summers spent in the Hamptons, raise your Tom Collins and salute this new prep comeback!
