UTM hosted its first ever Water Awareness Week the week of February 9 to 11. The event consisted of informative displays and special events to students interested in learning more about where our water comes from and what is happening to it.
Members of the Ministry of Environment set up display boards in the Student Centre from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. showcasing information on water treatment and disposable water bottles. The informative displays also included a taste testing stand, where large jugs of water were set up for students to taste the difference between filtered and unfiltered water. Subsidized reusable water bottles were also sold.
On February 10, a game of “Water Jeopardy” took place in the Student Centre, where students were quizzed on all things pertaining to water. The next day, Harvey Shear held a lecture in the North Building. The topic focused on freshwater and the challenges facing Mexico in the 21st Century. The same day, a documentary entitled “Flow: For the Love of Water” was screened in the Student Centre presentation room. The movie by Irena Salina focused on the world’s failing freshwater supply, pollution, human rights and the actualization of a world water cartel.
