The Student Housing & Residence Life Department and students from U of T Mississauga participated in the second annual United Way CN Tower Climb on Saturday.
In its first year, the CN Tower Climb involved 45 residence students and received the honour of 2010 Top Fundraising Team. This year, SHRL has partnered with the Office of Student Life to expand the event to all students on campus. In total, 116 students and staff signed up, more than doubling last year’s attendance.
In addition to the CN Tower Climb last year, new events are also being introduced this year, and many favourites are scheduled to return. The Campus Police are hosting their first-ever Bowl-a-thon on November 17 to raise money for the United Way, while the popular Library Used Book Sale will be held on November 22.
This year also marks the appointment of a new student chair to assist with the campaign effort. Incia Khalid was recently given the position to directly connect the campaign to the student community in a meaningful and tangible fashion. Last year was the first year a student chair was appointed, and with the growing success of several major events, the addition has proven to be successful.
United Way, a not-for-profit organization, has teamed up with all University of Toronto campuses with the intention of raising money for local communities.
According to the United Way of Peel Region website, the foundation provides ongoing support for a network of 99 services and programs delivered through 53 agencies that help more than 420,000 people in Peel. United Way also provides training and skill development to build strong social service agencies that will efficiently reinforce and integrate these services into the community.
