Drunk texting (come on, we’ve all done it)

The phenomenon of drunk texting has become very popular in this day and age. I know that many of you reading this article are either currently shaking your heads side to side, due to embarrassment and regret, or smiling from ear to ear because your drunk text landed you in something awesome. Drunk texting can benefit you or (in most cases) make you look like a fool.

We’ve all done it at least once or twice; however, if you’ve done it more than 50 times, the next meeting you should attend should be DTA (Drunk Texting Anonymous), because 50 drunk text messages is just way too many. As I was writing this article, someone told me to check out TFLN. I didn’t want to ask what TFLN was because I was embarrassed that I already didn’t know what it was, so I Googled it. And to my surprise, I found that TFLN is a website called “Texts from Last Night”. This website consists of text messages from random people who are writing these messages under the influence of alcohol. How much booze is in their system? I’m not sure, but from reading them (and some are pretty hilarious), they must have been smashed, or else the messages are made up.

I spoke to a few people on campus about drunk text messages, and whether or not people do it, or whether it’s even a good idea. Vanessa M, a fourth-year geography student, says, “I’ve drunk texted a few times… okay, a lot of times. I think people do it because if what we say is embarrassing then we can just blame it on the alcohol.”

So why bother drunk texting at all? Many people have told me that when they are drunk, they get a sort of brave chemical feeling inside, whereby everything that is said or done seems to be a brilliant idea. This unknown courage (thought to be developed from the immense consumption of one too many tequila shots) gives you the chops—so to speak, to text that special crush you have or that old fling that brings back fond memories.

A little bit of the magical booze gives us the courage to do things we normally wouldn’t do. But it does not mean that this is always a good thing. A friend of mine who shall remain nameless (or else she will kill me) messaged a guy at 1 a.m. just to say, “Hello, what’s up?”, or something almost recognizable as that. She’d had a little bit too much to drink and decided to find out what her crush was doing at that moment. Well, you know what he thought—booty call. Who messages people at 1 a.m. drunk and misspelling words? See how things tend to get misinterpreted?

Even though we blame our drunk texts on the level of intoxication in our bodies, it doesn’t mean you’re completely off the hook. Sure, people understand that when we get our drunk text on like Ke$ha, our messages are heavily influenced by the amount of booze we had that night. But isn’t there that notion that what people say (or in this case text) when they are drunk, they reveal part of the truth they’d be afraid to say sober? What do you think? Should people continue to drunk text, or should we all hide our phones before we whip out the beers?
